Falling into Autumn

I could sense it in the air this morning, I pulled on a sweatshirt and raked a few leaves and by evening I was pouring a glass of red wine and lighting a candle. Small rituals I usually reserve for fall. But my favorite part of fall, is the opportunity to change planters with appropriate cool-weather plants in an array of fall colors.

A client recently built a 58-inch long, narrow planter that we thought would make a statement centerpiece on their outdoor table to enjoy morning lattes and evening conversations. Since the planter was made of pine and without drainage holes it presented a minor dilemma, sufficient drainage was needed to protect the planter as well as to also keep the plants happy. As a solution, we layered 6-inch terracotta pots within the planter, which allowed for a grouping of mini vignettes.

Within the planter, we paired silver-toned dusty miller, with the supple color of Frizzle Sizzle Raspberry pansy, rich double mums and then layered in various sedums to create a full, autumn planting scheme that will last well beyond the season.
